With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones Ephesians 6:18 NABRE
Paul in most of his letters urges prayer constantly and here as he ends this letter to the community at Ephesus he challenges them and us to prayers of petitions and seeking God’s help. Paul writes we should seek help at every opportunity, to pray at every opportunity and remember when we pray we are not alone, we have the Spirit of God with us. If we are conscious that the Spirit is with us when we pray and know we are not alone, the Spirit will have good guidance in prayer, the Spirit will lead us to prayers that is best for all people. If we pray in the Spirit it is much like asking for our prayer in Jesus name, Jesus tells asking in His name we will receive whatever we ask for and is within God’s will to give (see John 14:13-14.) In all prayer be watchful, in other words stay awake, select good opportunities for prayer, early in the morning perhaps. In our prayer we should take into consideration all the holy ones, we might say all Christians and all children of God. We should pray for our own strength, as we seek knowledge, endurance and love for all God’s children. We are challenged to love others which includes praying for their well-being and their needs.
The message of Jesus is that we should have a personal relationship with God. We should be in constant communication with God, this communication is prayer, it allows us to worship and show our love for God and it also allows us to know God’s quiet voice in response to our prayer. Praying unceasingly is about making God our best friend, one who we hear and know well.
