John 1:29 – January 10, 2021

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” John 1:29 NABRE

John the Baptist’s primary role is to testify or bear witness to Jesus. John’s testimony has Jesus appearing for the first time at the Jordon and as John sees Jesus he says something about Him. This is the first time John sees Him saying, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the Word.” The Lamb is a reference in the bible to the lamb which is central in the Passover liturgy, celebrating the exodus and God’s mighty act to save the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. In the gospels we see Jesus depicted as the new Passover Lamb whose sacrifice brings deliverance from sin and reconciliation with God. We also see lambs and other animals used as sacrifice in the temple system, an offering to God in worship services. This title of Lamb for Jesus is seen as a sacrificial title, his death means removing the sin of people and reconcile them with God. But, Jesus is not a typical Lamb, He lifts sins and brings complete reconciliation allowing all to become righteous and able to be united with God in life and eternally. John will go on to give honor to Jesus and declaring the baptisms he provides are a means of telling people about the coming of Jesus. John declares that people will receive the Holy Spirit from Jesus.

John fulfills prophecy announcing the coming of this Lamb, but this is prologue. Jesus is the one who changes everything, John simply points to Him. John is an example for every prophet, disciple or follower; their responsibility is to point to Jesus, the Lamb.

Is your message pointing to Jesus? Do you accept this Lamb of God who wants to save you?
