Luke 11:34-35 – January 9, 2021

The lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye is sound, then your whole body is filled with light, but when it is bad, then your body is in darkness. Take care, then, that the light in you not become darkness. Luke 11:34-35 NABRE

Jesus’ teaching is emphasizing the word of God, making a connection between God’s word and light. Jesus who is light is the one who communicates the word of God that must be heard. Jesus shifts to speaking about our ability to see through our eye’s which are the lamp of our bodies. When the eye is sound, basically working as intended, there is no difficulty and we become full of light. However when the eye is bad we remain in darkness. Jesus challenges us to be people who make sound and sincere judgements about Him, if we don’t we are in the darkness, a comparison to being influenced by evil. In biblical language a person with a good eye is a person who is generous, sharing with the poor. On the other hand those whose eye is darkened, influenced by evil, gives nothing to a neighbor in need. Jesus has previously spoken about the Good Samaritan, who knew how to look upon his neighbor with mercy and care. Jesus will also admonish the Pharisees who are more concerned with paying tithes for small things while neglecting more important things like justice and the love of God. We are challenged to be filled with light.

Jesus in the next verse indicates if our whole body is full of light, no part of it darkness, then we will be filled with light, like Jesus who is the light. Jesus is challenging us to be full of light becoming like Jesus who is the light, in fact Jesus tells us He is the light of the world (see John 8:12). Our journey is to become like Jesus, following the word He communicates and living in the light; becoming light.

Are you a light?  Can you live each day with a light shining on you?

Jesus tells us He is the light of the world (see John 8:12.) Our journey is to become like Jesus, following the word He communicates and living in the light; becoming light. Click To Tweet
