1 Chronicles 16:8 – November 28, 2020

Give thanks to the LORD, invoke his name; make known among the peoples his deeds. 1 Chronicles 16:8 NABRE

This verse from the book of Chronicles, a telling of the events left out of the books of the Pentateuch, begins a hymn that is an ensemble of pieces that already existed, specifically from the palms. This verse is from Psalm 105 and is a song that is being sung by exiles returning from Babylon. It celebrates in life and liturgy the marvels God has performed on their behalf; God gathered them from among the nations to give thanks to His holy name. Those who have returned see the liturgy as a place where they can celebrate their identity as God’s chosen people. This verse begins the description of David bringing the Holy Ark from its temporary quarters to the city of Jerusalem, where it was installed with great ceremony. The people saw the Ark as representing God and where the Ark is the people will find God. Eventually Solomon built the great temple for the Ark and people would travel from all over to be with God. It is very telling that the story begins by giving thanks to God. God has done so much for the people they always want to praise and worship God. We know that God has done even more since the time of Jesus, sending His only Son as teacher, lover and redeemer. We know that God loves us so much that He sent His only Son so that we may all be free and have a way cleared for us to meet God.

With this opening verse all are exhorted to join a life with God and to accompany God wherever He May go. We must also recognize in these words that we should make known all the good God does in our lives. We should slow down and recognize that it is through God that we have all we need to live and enjoy life. So be thankful and make God’s acts known.

Are you thankful? Do you recognize good works in your life?

We should slow down and recognize that it is through God that we have all we need to live and enjoy life. So be thankful and make God's acts known. Click To Tweet
