Mathew 24:42 – November 23, 2020

Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Mathew 24:42 NABRE

Jesus begins to speak about the future events, urging our preparedness for them. Jesus’ focus became about the day and hour of Jesus Second Coming. Jesus asserts that the day of His arrival is a mystery known only to the Father. Human beings have no knowledge of it, nor do spiritual beings, even Jesus doesn’t know the day of His return. Knowing the return belongs to the Father who establishes all matters with respect to the kingdom.  Jesus illustrates the point by telling the story of Noah, contrasting the days leading up to judgement when it strikes, just as Noah’s generation did not know that God was about to pour out His judgment with the torrents of the flood. These people went about their business; eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage. By the time the rains come it was too late and all but Noah and his family were carried away to watery deaths. The Son of Man will come suddenly and unexpectedly, so disciples must be prepared. When it finally arrives, the hour when the Lord comes will catch many by surprise. His arrival will be like a thief at night. We can be lulled to sleep, like the head of house who settles down to bed, only to discover in the morning that a nighttime burglar made off with his valuables. Being prepared for the Lord’s return requires spiritual alertness and vigilance.

Being ready requires daily following the message of Jesus, living life selflessly and with care for others. Those who are more concerned with their own collection of goods and property while ignoring the needs of others may lead to a surprise judgement. Jesus’ coming includes judging those who will enter the kingdom of God and others who will not. We must remember, stay awake, be ready!
