Psalms 40:8 – October 21, 2020

so I said, “See; I come with an inscribed scroll written upon me.” Psalms 40:8 NABRE

The main focus of this psalm is to praise God and make His  word known. The psalmist has hope in the Lord and the Lord hears him, delivers him and inspires him to utter praise so that many would turn to the Lord. The psalm continues with the psalmist addressing the Lord directly, acknowledging His many wondrous deeds and what God expected in return for them. The last section of the psalm is devoted to supplication, including a plea for forgiveness, a plea for help against enemies. Speaking about the Lord’s deeds the psalmist indicates if God’s deeds were proclaimed they would be more than can be numbered. But in return for these wondrous deeds the Lord expects Himself and His Law to be obeyed. He does not rule out or devalue offerings, but they should be signs of heartfelt obedience. The psalmist response is total readiness to do the Lord’s will, for that is what is expected of him according to what is written in the scroll. The scroll mentioned might suggest the psalmist is in fact a king given a copy of the Law at his coronation. Thus he believes his mission is to keep the Law of the Lord. Jesus mission is to always do the will of the Lord saying, “The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.” (John 8:29) There is no greater act of love than obeying the one we love, giving ourselves wholly in the service of the one we love, doing their will, making them priority.

We have seen Jesus Christ give His all for His Father and through His service for us. The act of becoming human and living among us is a true act of love, saying I will do anything for you, even living with you as one of you. Jesus came with an inscribed scroll to live for us.

Do you obey anyone? Is obedience a negative word for you?
