Luke 12:36 – October 20, 2020

Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. Luke 12:36 NABRE

Jesus is teaching about readiness. He uses imagery of the Passover, it is night, the people wait with loins gird (pulling up the ankle length robe and tucking it in at the waste with a belt, ready to travel or for service.) The message spoken here by Jesus is also a command given to the Israel’s regarding the Passover meal exodus. Jesus speaks of servants awaiting their Master, vigilant and ready for the Master’s arrival. The message to understand, as Jesus disciples; we must be vigilant and ready not knowing when Jesus will return. It is not surprising in Jesus story when the Master comes there is a meal, we have the impression it could be a wedding feast, the people listening may be thinking of a Messianic banquet, people reclining at table in the Kingdom of God. In the quoted verse we read the Master arrives and reverses roles, the Master girds his loins in service of those who were waiting and now reclining at the banquet and serves them. The Last Passover meal Jesus has with His apostles provides an example, the meal is ready and Jesus waits on those around the table, bending and washing their feet like a servant. We read Jesus saying, “For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at table? I am among you as the one who serves.” (Luke 22:27)  The Last Supper becomes a foretaste of Jesus bringing a banquet in His second coming.

Be ready. We do not know when we will meet Jesus again or be called away from our earthly life. Don’t recline and sleep, recline with your sneakers on to go and serve.

Are you vigilant? Do you seek Jesus every day?
