Proverbs 1:8-9 – October 12, 2020

Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and reject not your mother’s teaching; A graceful diadem will they be for your head; a pendant for your neck. Proverbs 1:8-9 NABRE

The opening of the book of Proverbs includes ten lessons by a teacher to his disciples, whom he usually addresses as “my son.” The lessons are designed to awaken in disciples a desire for knowledge, to motivate them to accept teachings that the master expounds. In these lessons are discourses on Wisdom, someone who takes initiative and sells her wares. The excellent speeches made here by Wisdom are designed to persuade the candidate of the advantages of good training. The book of Proverbs should give order to our actions and as a corrective to our passions, it is a discipline or a guide to life, composed of saving maxims and good lessons for those who pay attention to them. The first lesson is to avoid bad company. But it opens with a very general, wise observation, accept your father’s instruction and your mother’s teaching, they will be like having a constant companion who will guide you in the best action, including who to decide should be a friend. Our friends will usually influence us toward a particular direction, the better the friend the better the direction. Falling in with bad company can lead us to make bad decisions and failures in judgement. It is unwise to fall in with bad company. Wisdom is acquired by listening to wise teachers which include those who are our elders and love us.

All through life we are students in one way or another, sometimes we are teachers as well. Following the lessons of others is a great way to become wise without having to make similar mistakes that our teachers have made. Accepting instruction openly, from those wise teachers, your parents, even to their last days.

How do you learn? What is your path to Wisdom?
