John 1:51 – August 24, 2020

And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” John 1:51 NABRE

Jesus began His ministry calling young men to be His disciples, usually people who may not be thought of as church founders and miracle workers. As Jesus calls them He spoke to them about a certain view of what will be in store for them. Jesus tells them they will see the sky open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man, a name He calls Himself more than any other in the gospels. Many scripture scholars believe Jesus is referring to Jacob’s dream. In the dream Jacob sees a stairway from the ground to the heaven and God’s angels going up and down on it (see Genesis 28:12.) Jacob saw the Lord and was told his descendants will fill the earth. When Jacob woke he said, the Lord is truly in this place. This happened in Bethel which means “the house of God” (see Genesis 28:18-19.) So Jesus reveals an important theme, in Bethel God reveals Himself and now God is revealed directly and physically. Bethel as house of God is God’s dwelling place according to Jacob, now Jesus is the dwelling place of God. The Word has become flesh and dwells among us. (See John 1:14) Jesus is the direct and physical dwelling of God in a new and highly powerful way. God walks among us. Jesus becomes the gateway or stairway to heaven. The rest of the gospel will carry the message that Jesus is the way to God in heaven.

These men called to serve with Jesus may not have understood this message when first called, but through their life they became witness to the message that Jesus is the way to God. We should look to Jesus to climb the stairway to heaven.

Will you take the gateway to heaven? Can you believe Jesus is the way to God?
