Psalms 42:8 – August 21, 2020

Deep calls to deep in the roar of your torrents, and all your waves and breakers sweep over me. Psalms 42:8 NABRE

This is the psalm of a person far off from Jerusalem and they long to be with God, for the Hebrew people God is in the temple. It also represents the cries of Israel when they are in captivity, yearning for freedom, a sole desire is to wash themselves in the waters of God, in God’s Word. It is always when we cannot have reach something important that we want it the most. The psalm compares this to thirst. A deer, one of the animals that becomes more parched than others because it dwells in arid wilderness, is constantly seeking to quench its thirst. We thirst similarly for God, we have this thirst in our heart, we ache to find what will satisfy, we often turn to the things of this world, but it is only the most High God who can satisfy. It is God we seek, it is only God who will quench our thirst.  The psalmist is challenged, their soul is downcast, sad to be without God and Israel is downcast to be away from God, but God aches to be without His creation. We should consider the loss God endures because we are away, because we don’t hold until God as we should. In the quoted verse we see how deep the psalmist has gotten from the presence of God, more and more trouble pushes the palmist away, wave after wave rushes over the psalmist, sometimes it is the discrimination against Israel, sometimes it is punishment for a wrong course. It sweeps over him (us) constantly.

The psalmist will repeat they are cast down, their soul aching for God, but God also aching for His lost. The psalm is a prayer for anyone away from God, deeply missing God who deeply misses them. When we miss God deeply, God misses us more deeply.

Do you ache for God? Do you realize you are missed by God?
