“Worthy are you, Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things; because of your will they came to be and were created.” Revelation 4:11 NABRE
The Apostle John is sharing a vision of a heavenly worship of God. He sees angels and other royals coming together to honor God. John is granted this vision that he may share it with us, a sort of view of what being near God can be like for those with a pure heart and belief in the heavenly kingdom. John speaks about four living creatures that represent all of creation who day and night never stop proclaiming, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.” (Revelation 4:8) They proclaim God the holiest being, beyond anything we might see or understand, separated from all others in sacredness and honor. In the quoted verse John hears the elders, patriarchs of the Hebrew people and leaders of the Christian renewal declaring God worthy of honor and power, the creator of all that has been and will be. There is no greater being in known understanding worthy of the things God receives from those in heaven who know and see all that God was, is and will be. When those that know you proclaim your greatness it can be counted upon as truly deserved. It is why we honor God in one sense, because witnesses of what is happening tell us that God is the holiest being in all creation. These elders and leaders are humble in their approach to God but generous in their praise. We should mediate with this kind of vision to help us learn how to be humble.
We sometimes think we are deserving of praise, and it may be so, but so much more Holy is God creator of all and Most High in the heavenly kingdom. Sit in awe, learn your greatness comes from God.
