It is good for the man gracious in lending, who conducts his affairs with justice. Psalms 112:5 NABRE
This is a psalm that describes the good fortune of a wise man, and the kind of life he leads. His behavior is in line with the Lord’s own way of acting. The psalm includes an eternal dimension. This is a psalm that shows true wisdom consists in acknowledging the Lord, keeping His commandments, and offering Him praise. It begins by declaring the man who keeps the Law of the Lord is blessed or happy. Anyone who wants to be happy needs to lead the sort of life described in this psalm. Happiness doesn’t come from acknowledgements by others, it is a reward from God who sees everything in secret. One of the ways we can be happy and receive blessing from God is to be a person who lends. In life it can be difficult to borrow, those who don’t have much have a certain pride and don’t want to ask their friends or community members for a loan in a time of need. A good person lends when they know someone has need. No one can make it on their own, life depends on others, lending and helping others is important particularly for those of us who want to conduct ourselves in the way of the Lord. Those who lend can be thought of as wild and imprudent with their finances. But truly one who lends is compassionate and just. Lending and borrowing are integral to order in the world. For children of God all we possess is held in trust, as all belongs to God. If we find someone in need we must share God’s blessing with them.
We hear many stories of people receiving a windfall from the US government to help them through the COVID-19 pandemic who did not need the money. Thankfully we also hear of those who helped someone in need with this money.
