Matthew 16:15-16 – July 22, 2020

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:15-16 NABRE

Jesus is outside the region of a Jewish setting, in an area more known as a Greek city, populated mainly by gentiles. Jesus engages his disciples, asking them. “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” Jesus often referred to Himself as the son of man, a phrase that has Him declaring He is human. This question solicits many answers from the disciples; a prophet, holy person, but the common thought is that Jesus is in the line of the prophets. Jesus puts the question to His disciples, “But who do you say that I am?” The response comes from Simon Peter, “You are the Messiah.” This is a confession of faith that stands amongst the many responses that have been made. Messiah means the “Anointed One.” It has been applied to kings and priest, many of whom were installed in their office by a rite of anointing. There was a great hope for a coming Messiah, initiated in the promise God made to David, (read 2 Samuel 7:8-17.) God speaking indicates David’s house will stand forever, it will be formed by one who will be son to God and God will be a father to him and this kingdom will last forever. There was a succession of kings from David but eventually the line is broken and the kingdom of David collapses.

But hope continues in the people that the kingdom will be reestablished, a new David, a royal Messiah from David’s descendants. This messianic hope flourished in the minds of the people and came to rest on Jesus. Peter announces this truth and goes on to say Jesus is the Son of God who God said would come in the covenant He announced to David. A new kingdom is established, we are members of it.

How do you answer Jesus’ question? Do you work to grow this Kingdom?
