Psalms 119:30 – July 21, 2020

The way of loyalty I have chosen; I have kept your judgments. Psalms 119:30 NABRE

This psalm, the longest in the book of Psalms, is used often for prayerful meditation. As prayer it provides an example of giving thanks, assisting in supplication and helping seek wisdom through contemplation of God’s goodness and gift to us all. The section of the psalm with the quoted verse has the psalmist speaking of the door which will open the way to achieve the path of truth. In the quoted verse we read that the psalmist has chosen the way of loyalty or maybe more common faithfulness. The loyal way is the opposite of the way of infidelity, or falsehood. The person who follows this way, the loyal, faithful way, has cleansed their hands of iniquity, separating themselves from wrongdoing and attaching themselves to justice. The verse goes on to indicate that after making the decision to be faithful the psalmist is ready for the judgments of God. The lifestyle of the undisciplined person does not conform with the demands of scripture and their performance is not equal to the expectations of God. The loyal person does not bend scripture to suit their own personal needs. Rather, the one who is loyal, completely accepts God’s judgement and rulings and will tailor their life to conform to God’s will. Following God’s will and attending to the ideas of scripture is the ultimate expression of humility and submission to God.

We must chose faithfulness and loyalty to God for our best life. In so doing we accept God’s hand in our life, knowing that even in suffering we are being pleasing to God.

What way have you chosen for your life? Do you bend God’s will for your personal needs or tailor your life to God’s will?
