Psalms 68:4 – June 17, 2020

Then the just will be glad; they will rejoice before God; they will celebrate with great joy. Psalms 68:4 NABRE

This is a psalm celebrating God’s presence in the temple and God’s protection of Israel. It opens describing God’s power over His enemies and celebrates His power manifested, by the end, the listener is acknowledging God’s power in heaven and in the temple. The quoted verse speaks of the righteous, who are glad of God’s power, God rid them of their enemies and so they sing and rejoice before God, they celebrate and have great joy. It is beautiful how in a few verses God has done what the people want and so they are happy and joyful with God. Isn’t this always true. We pray to God, we get an answer favoring us, then we praise and exult God. Are we all the same, seeking a God who favors us so we rejoice when we see God’s hand come to our aid? The psalm opens; let God arise, or another translation; arise O God. I often think of my own prayer, am I speaking to God as someone who understands God’s  power and wants His favor or am I praying for God’s will to be done in a world that seems to be moving more and more away from faith in a deity who has power and control over everything. We pray in the USA for a returning to normality, stop the virus and its impact, stop the protests and their challenge to us, stop pointing fingers at others and saying they’re the problem, stop the demonization of those who don’t agree with us. Let us be united.

Maybe the virus, the protest, the challenge from others is God using these as an answer. We hated not being able to go out to a nice restaurant and eat, drink and enjoy, but when I think about it, the poor are never able to do this. Perhaps God has arisen and the new normal is a challenge to the old normal.

Do you rejoice when God does what you want?  What do you think God’s will is for our country?
