John 6:51 – June 14, 2020

I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. John 6:51 NABRE

Jesus is proclaiming that He has come from God just as God sent the manna to the Israelites in the desert during their sojourn from slavery in Egypt to their new home in the land of Canaan. So this manna God sent from heaven sustained the Israelites, but it did not provide eternal life. Jesus is the living bread that will give us life forever. Though the Israelites ate the manna every day they still died. However, the bread of life sent from heaven does what manna could not do, it gives eternal life, so that whoever eats this bread will live forever. This is an allusion to the tree of life in the Garden of Eden. According to the book of Genesis, the tree of life’s fruit could provide immortality. After their sin, the human couple, Adam and Eve, were expelled from Eden to keep them from eating this food (Genesis 3:22-23) Now Jesus says that anyone who eats the bread He gives will live forever. He is opening the way to paradise and offers the food that gives immortality.

This passage from John and Jesus breaking bread at the Last Supper have been interpreted literally and spiritually. The literal believers see Jesus providing His body and blood in the bread (and wine) which provides eternal life. The spiritual believers see eating the bread as equivalent to proclaiming belief and therefore will have eternal life. Jesus foresaw these differing theologies and provides an equivalent result, bread true food or spiritual food, you receive eternal life. If you seek Jesus’ real presence in bread or you seek Jesus as spiritual food you will find a church that satisfies. Either way you are gifted with life.
