Mark 12:30-31 – June 4, 2020

‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. Mark 12:30-31 NABRE

Jesus is asked, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” Jesus responds with the verse quoted, love God and love others. Understanding Jesus here doesn’t mean He is overriding the commandments God has given for the many years before Jesus incarnation, but that as we love God and others we are including all those commandments. The commandments given are about our relationship with God and our relationship with our neighbors. The commandments guide us toward a set of moral codes about treating God and others. Jesus moves the commandments from our head, understanding a set of laws, to our heart, leading with our loving intent which comes from the heart. Much of what we do in life is led by how our heart is molded, how our heart is made pure. We are born with a child’s heart that Jesus teaches we must return to. A child is pure, excited, trusting and forgiving. We must do what we can to make our hearts pure, so our thoughts are honoring of others. When our heart is pure we are excited and positive about seeing others, we meet them with joy and love. When our heart is pure we are ready to forgive even when we are not asked for forgiveness. With a pure heart we trust, maybe not all others but trust them through God. With a pure heart we live what Jesus calls the first commands, we don’t have to think about it, we live unconsciously in love.

Our heart leads us. Protect your heart from hate. Fill your heart with love, be pure, trusting, excited, and unceasingly forgiving. Love is not an emotion it is action.

How do you love? How do you mold your heart?
