Mark 12:25 – June 3, 2020

When they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven. Mark 12:25 NABRE

Jesus is questioned by the Sadducees, one of the major varieties of Judaism. They did not believe in punishment or reward after death, they did believe the soul perished with the body after death. In this encounter with Jesus they are challenging Jesus on life after death, asking about a women who has married seven brothers according to Jewish law. She is married to a man who dies and his brother marries her according to the law, this continues for all seven brothers. The Sadducees ask whose wife is she in the afterlife. Their question gives Jesus a chance to share something of what life is like after death. First Jesus explains that life is not continued “as is” after the earthly life ends. Life after death is different from life on earth. We don’t marry and bring children into the world, this is an earthly function that has fulfilled its purpose on earth. Jesus explains we are like angels in heaven, we are not disembodied spirits, but we have a glorious and external existence like angels. Jesus also continues to honor sexual differentiations though there is no link to marriage or child bearing. Jesus in His answer to this question from the Sadducees affirms several points; life after death, bodily resurrection and the existence of angels. Jesus goes on to assure the listener that God is the God of the living, not God of the dead. God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, with God as protector and defender including saving them (and us) from death.

We are part of the resurrected life, a life of glory with God like angels when we accept Jesus or believe in God and accept His precepts.

Do you look forward to a life of glory? Do you trust God’s defense of your life?
