John 15:15 – May 15, 2020

I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. John 15:15 NABRE

Jesus is speaking to His disciples’ a final teaching before He enters into His passion. He addresses two types of relationships, slave and friend. In the first, a slave obeys their master based on the master’s authority, which can be shown through force if commands are not obeyed. In more modern times this would not be seen so much as a master/salve relationship but more a boss/worker relationship, where the worker follows the boss’s instruction because of his authority, which can be demonstrated by a different kind of force, a demotion, less hours or even dismissing the worker. It may not seem it but this is a type of love relationship in Jesus’ eyes. The master/boss have to love their underling in some manner in order to maintain the relationship and in particular accomplish tasks. Jesus had a Master relationship with his disciples because they were His students. They obeyed Him or risked losing their teacher or doing some novice error because they aren’t ready to be disciples. Jesus changes the relationship in these final moments of their apprenticeship saying He now calls them friends. He has told them all that He knows, He has revealed everything the Father told Jesus to share with His students. So the love relationship changes; they obey Jesus because this is what He wants and they respect and want to be His friend.

Jesus desires our friendship as well. We can learn everything that the Father told Jesus to share by entering into His word. Knowing Jesus as His students know Him provides us with this same status of friend.

Do you want Jesus’ as a friend? Do you know what Jesus’ taught?
