Colossians 3:1 – May 16, 2020

If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1 NABRE

Paul writing to the community at Colossae is trying to encourage them from falling back into their pre-Christian life. He reminds them that they are united with Christ and therefore what is true of Christ is true of them. Their baptism is life into Christ not some temporarily grace that gets them started toward Christ. Therefore they must know that they have been raised with Christ and have already begun to share in His divine life and glory, though in a hidden way. They should see their life as preparation for the day when the glory of Christ will be fully revealed. In this opening verse of chapter three Paul encourages the reader to “seek what is above.” Paul is not pointing to a location but speaking about how the reader should orient their life. Since Christians who have been baptized have truly died and been raised with Christ, the concerns of this world should no longer demand their focus. This is not to mean that all things of the world are not good, in fact as followers of Jesus we should relate to others with purity and selflessness, putting others first, whether they are followers of Christ of not. The reader should orient their daily life toward union with the divine life of Christ.

In order to show the honor of Christ, Paul mentions He is seated at the right hand of God. A position of highest sovereignty. We read it in the psalms “… The LORD says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand, while I make your enemies your footstool.” (110:1) We can imagine Christ seated near God and looking down on humanity providing grace and guidance. Seek this grace, seek His guidance.

Do you know whose you are? Can you imagine the divine in you?
