Jesus takes time during the meal known as the Last Supper to give a series of teachings. He teaches many things, one of the major topics concerns the Advocate, commonly known as the Holy Spirit. Jesus says the Holy Spirit will be the disciples guide in the future. They will no longer see Jesus as He must return to His Father, for Jesus a joyous future event. Jesus says the Holy Spirit will come, teach them everything they will need to know, even teachings of Jesus they may have forgotten. Jesus said a few times in the Gospels the Spirit will help with recall after Jesus’ glorification, e.g. “His disciples did not understand this at first, but when Jesus had been glorified they remembered that these things were written about him and that they had done this for him.” (John 12:16) Jesus speaks throughout this section about things that will happen in the future, when the disciples see these future events they will remember Jesus spoke of these realities, all of which will be revealed at His resurrection. Future teaching includes the coming of the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father in Jesus name. The Spirit teaches and reminds, dwelling within the disciples so when they need to speak for God, the Spirit will give them the necessary words.
Paul writes there is one Spirit but many spiritual gifts, including; wisdom, knowledge, healing, prophecy, variety of tongues and more (see 1 Corinthians 12:4-11.) We won’t all have all the gifts, however to help build the Kingdom we will have some gift which is needed. The Spirit is the person of God we should invoke when we want to use our gifts.
