Luke 8:15 – March 28, 2020

But as for the seed that fell on rich soil, they are the ones who, when they have heard the word, embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through perseverance. Luke 8:15 NABRE

Jesus is teaching many people who came to Him from all around. The parable is of a person who is sowing seed, some lands on the path, other seed on rocky ground, other seed in thorns and the final place seed falls is rich soil. Jesus is teaching about the word of God. The seed on the path is the word heard but the devil takes these people away. The seed on the rocky place are those who hear the word but have no root and at the first sign of trouble they fall away. The seed falling in the thorns are those who go along but eventually are choked off by anxieties, riches and the pleasures of life. The final seed falls in rich soil, these are people who hear the word, embrace it and are generous of heart and bear fruit through their perseverance. The word of God is rich and provides great possibility for growth. We are changed when we hear God’s word, in fact God’s word has changed the world. We generally live a moral code that has come forth from the word of God. Even those who do not follow or believe in God believe in the rights of themselves and others that are defined in credos like the Golden Rule; to treat others as you wish to be treated.

Jesus explains there are many variations on how the word of God is heard, not every time the word is heard does it grow in us to become rich and produce a generous heart and fruit for the Kingdom of God. We are in a time when we should rely on God’s word. Be courageous reading the word, let it grow in you, let the word be rich in you and let the word produce a person who trusts and loves.

Do you spend time in God’s word? Does the word grow rich in you?
