David is being pursued by enemies who want to kill him, they are powerful and rich. Yet, David’s complete trust in God remains unshaken. In fact, the persecution by his enemies elicits new foundations of faith from David’s soul. He speaks out against the forces which threaten him and revel their worthlessness. This psalm is a source of strength and courage for those who trust in God, it counsels wait patiently. If you place your hope in God and in God alone; if you relinquish your infatuation with money and political influence, then your redemption is assured. We see several times in this psalm David writing that God is rock and salvation. God is a foundation, a solid spirit upon which anyone can place their trust. God is a protective rock, a shield nothing can penetrate or infiltrate to hurt us. God is salvation, He would not create us and leave us to falter and fend for ourselves God is always present to shape and mold us. We are like newborn babies before God, He will form our spirit and lead us to growth toward God who wants to save us. God is a fortress, with God we are protected like people enclosed in a great fort, protected by walls and security forces. With God we shall not fall, we cannot be swayed to make false moves or fall for things that will cause our decline. God is all we need and with God we need not lose faith or be concerned.
There are times like these when normal is not normal, our routines are forced to change and we have no security in the things we have always counted upon. This is the time to turn to God and let God be our fortress. God will not fail us, in the end God will be with us, consoling and supporting us. Turn to God daily for strength.
