Psalms 100:2 – February 24, 2020

serve the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful song. Psalms 100:2 NABRE

This psalm was sung in the Temple during the service of a Thanksgiving offering that would bring in thanksgiving after having survived great danger. Hebrew teachers believe that not a day would go by without some danger, although people may be oblivious of the threatening forces surrounding them. Unknown to us God protects us from such dangers and performs countless miracles of salvation. For this constant deliverance, this psalm is recited in daily thanksgiving. The quoted verse refers to Israel, God’s chosen and beloved people, who serve God as sons serve their father, with joyful confidence of His love and His patience toward the people. If we are thankful for all God does then we should come to Him with joyous song. Don’t hide your feelings, but display your joy as you come to God’s presence. In fact we should have a joyous frame of mind when we come to God at any time, but especially in prayer. Thus, this psalm is an invitation to come thankfully to the Lord for all He has done and to do so joyfully.

We have faith and trust in the Lord that what could go wrong in our lives is for the most part avoided because of God’s presence. We make it through a red light unharmed when we didn’t notice it turned red. We don’t bang, or crash, or hurt ourselves when it seems obvious from an external point of view that a crash is likely. God is working miracles every day and we never know because they come in the form of “nothing happening.” Be ever thankful to God for all that goes right in your life and the many things that could go wrong but don’t. A psalm of thanksgiving makes tremendous sense, we should proclaim thanks joyfully to God, who is ever present.

Are you thankful every day for safety? Do you approach God joyfully?
