Proverbs 14:22 – February 23, 2020

Do not those who plan evil go astray? But those who plan good win steadfast loyalty. Proverbs 14:22 NABRE

The proverb asks a question about those who plan evil, do they go astray? The answer we like to believe is yes, evil plans go astray. We can imagine that the planning of evil is a sin. Jesus gives thought to the idea if we even lust in our heart we are committing adultery (cf. Matthew 5:27-28). We are never really resting when we are quiet. Our mind and heart are always working, thinking, planning, calculating. For Jesus if an idea gets to our heart it is already a sin. We can be convicted just for thinking the evil we would do. If we fall into the thought of planning something evil, no matter how minuet it may seem, we have begun something that will get harder and harder to push out of our mind or heart. Once we allow thoughts of evil planning enter us, it becomes easier and easier to repeat these thoughts. We must protect our heart from evil thoughts and especially any kind of evil planning. The Lord sees all thoughts of every heart and rewards accordingly. Because we have not committed the sin does protect us – planning it in our heart is just as bad before God. He will judge us; it is a foolish error to think we can devise evil and avoid judgement by not going through with the plan.

On the other hand, seeing thoughts of the heart that are good, planning good, even If it is not enacted wins loyalty from God. When we have good thoughts, planning acts of goodness, kindness and mercy we are seen as good in the eyes of the Lord and we will be rewarded. There are blessings for those who design good in their lives. God promises reward that you will receive. Always set your heart on good plans, and know that God will make His entire Kingdom available to you.

What is your mind and heart doing when you think you are resting? Do you have plans for good?
