The creation of man is the completion of God’s plan, all is created as God intended. God speaking out loud intends to make mankind in their image, God uses the plural for God when deciding to make mankind in God’s image. It hints at a communion of beings that are the one God. Today we see this as the Father, Son and Spirit. Creating mankind in God’s own image means there is the possibility for personal relationship with God. We read God created them male and female in God’s image and likeness. They are corporeal beings, endowed with sexuality and designed to live in society. They are capable of self-knowledge, self-possession and freely giving themselves as well as entering into communion with other persons. Mankind can offer love to one another and to God their creator. It indicates that each individual is in the image of God, but that two together male and female are also in the image of God and called to live in a communion of love, mirroring the love that God has for each of us. We are to reflect love so we know the love of God. We are created with purpose and we are deeply loved by our creator. This likeness helps us see God as a communion of persons who are in a communion of love with one another.
There can be no higher honor than being created in the image of God. God loves us so much God creates us like God. We are given dominion over all the fish, birds and every living creature that moves. God instructs us to be fruitful and multiply. The creator wants us to create on God’s behalf, so that we can fill the world with beings like God. It is a tremendous mission that we should live with the full purpose God has intended us to live.
