Jesus is teaching those who will listen about prayer. He tells us that everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks, finds; and the one who knocks, the door will be opened. We spend much of our life relying on our own talents, gifts and desires. We think we have to succeed through our own hands, that what we earn we have to work hard to possess. Jesus wants us to know that God wants to help. We can receive from God that which we do not deserve. We can find from God those things that we don’t think are possible for us. We can walk through doors with surprise on the other side. Through God we can have almost anything if we go to Him in prayer. It is interesting however that we see these three approaches; I wonder if Jesus is telling us to do all three to see our prayer answered. Don’t just ask but also seek and don’t just ask and seek but knock on doors. When God sees our willingness to do whatever it takes, through our effort, God will know we are serious when we pray and so we receive, find and walk through doors.
How often are our prayers answered and we don’t even know? For example we say in the Lord’s Prayer give us this day our daily bread. This may sound arrogant but how often do we open the refrigerator and find nothing? We may not get bread every day but we never go hungry. Even those who don’t have a refrigerator or a home can find good meals so they never starve. God answers our prayer for daily bread. Trust prayer, as a follower you may not get everything you want but God responds to our prayer.
