Ecclesiastes 7:9 – July 25, 2019

Do not let anger upset your spirit, for anger lodges in the bosom of a fool. Ecclesiastes 7:9 NABRE

The book of Ecclesiastes is attributed to a preacher, it is verses that are meant for people to hear in an assembly. These sayings are read on the Feast of Tabernacles, a feast celebrated by the Jewish community at the beginning of autumn, at the end of the fruit harvest. It is meant to be an invitation to rejoice and give thanks for good things of the harvest, remembering they are a gift from God. The verse we have quoted are advice to not get annoyed when things go wrong, it is followed by a verse that teaches there is no reason to complain or moan about the days past. The sun shines and the rain comes, there will be times of prosperity and times of adversity, God sees to it nothing is arbitrary. God has made all. For God all is in His power and all in His power He has decided is His will and the best thing for us and everyone else. The verse also brings thoughts of something Jesus said, “the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile.” (Matthew 15:18) Jesus was speaking about the kosher laws and that it is not anything that comes into the mouth that defiles but what is coming out, which is from the heart. We have in this verse the beginning of a heart getting hard and able to speak defilement. We must be careful what we allow to get in our heart.

@andy_stanley recently gave a series titled, “You are not the Boss of me” which had some wonderful insights on this topic defilement and what comes from the heart. I would recommend you have a view at Northpoint messages. We must be careful to protect our hearts and always trust God.

Do you look at the past with regret? Do you lose control of your emotions?
