John 15:5 – July 7, 2019

I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. John 15:5 NABRE

Jesus is speaking a farewell message with many rich teachings that He leaves with his disciples and us. Included in His message is a teaching on a vine and branches, a metaphor for life in Jesus. Jesus says he is the true vine, and His Father is the vine grower. He says that a branch cannot bear fruit on its own, an obvious statement. The source of life for the fruit is the vine, bringing all it needs for life. Jesus is telling us that He is the vine and we must remain attached to Him. If we are not attached to Jesus we die, we are nothing. What is interesting to me is that Jesus speaks with a confidence that we all start out attached to the vine. There is no way for a branch to graph itself to a growing vine, therefore we must begin on the vine. We all start life attached to Jesus. Somehow at our conception or perhaps birth or before Jesus connects us to Himself, so we may be a branch on the vine. The teaching of Jesus goes on to say anyone who does not remain in Him will be thrown out like a branch to wither. If we make the choice to detach from Jesus we die. We are no longer attached to the source of life and while we may still live in our body we have no spiritual life in us. Detached from Jesus we are spiritually dead. To remain alive we must choose remaining attached to Jesus.

Our life is meant to be attached to Christ. While we may not consciously know it, we are searching for that source of life, the source of our ability to bear fruit. We have it all along. Christ sees to it we start out on the vine. Live your life remaining attached to the vine.

Have you heard that God formed and knew you before you were born? Are you aware we begin life attached to Christ?

Christ sees to it we start out on the vine. Live your life remaining attached to the vine. Click To Tweet
