Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19 NABRE
At His resurrection Jesus instructs Mary to have His disciples meet Him in Galilee. In this closing section from Matthew we see Jesus meet the disciples there to give them some final instruction. When they first saw Him they worshiped and there were some who doubted. Jesus tells them He has power over all heaven and earth. He then confers on them a missionary mandate. “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” The entire world is declared the mission field, the diversity of people, differing communities, all people of the world for whom Jesus shed His blood. He expands evangelization beyond the people of Israel, the Gentiles are included, anyone they meet should hear about Jesus and the message He has shared with His disciples. A disciple is someone who listens to Jesus, learns how to live from Him, how to pray, and how to accede to the will of the Father. It is a new way of life, eventually these disciples are called Christians and they will be distinct in their lifestyle from those who don’t know Jesus. He tells them to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. It is known as a sacrament of initiation, a real sign of committing life to the message Jesus and accepting the commission of reaching others and making disciples.
Jesus wants everyone to be a disciple. He has come to share a message of love and improved life. He wants all to live life better with Him in their life. If we are disciples we too should want to make additional disciples. When we find something wonderful we naturally want to share it.
