Hebrews 4:16 – June 20, 2019

So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help. Hebrews 4:16 NABRE

In this section of Hebrews the author is writing about the word of God being sharper than any sword, penetrating and able to discern through hearts. No one is concealed from God, everything is exposed to the one to whom we will render an account. Those who will stand under the judgement of God realize their desperate need for mercy. This mercy is rendered by a great high priest who we have in Jesus the Son of God. Jesus is not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but who has been similarly tested, without sin. Given this great High Priest let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help. Jesus as High Priest has placed us in a new position before God. There was a divide between the holy and the profane. That divide was symbolized by the curtaining off of the “Holy of Holies” in the temple, a place only the high priest could enter once a year. But at Christ’s death the curtain was “torn in two from top to bottom” (Mark 15:38) signifying that the way is now opened for God’s people to enter His holy presence. Now that Christ opened the way, Christians should be bold and confident in their approach to God. We will receive mercy and forgiveness which has already been committed through Christ.

Jesus entering humanity made it reality that God can touch humanity and humanity can touch God. No longer is there a need for an intermediary as once was required. Jesus the final High Priest has made the way open, access to the holy is available to all, we can receive grace and mercy and be confident in God’s gifts.

Do you go directly to God to be graced and blessed? Are you confident in receiving God’s grace and forgiveness?
