Hebrews 11:6 – March 6, 2019

But without faith it is impossible to please him, for anyone who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6 NABRE

This chapter of Hebrews is a chapter on faith. It celebrates the blessings provided to many whose faith is cherished by God. The chapter list men and women of the old covenant who held on to their faith through difficult circumstances. When answering the question what does it mean to live by faith, Hebrews responds by providing real life examples to be imitated. Faith in these examples is not passive, but active, obedient reliance on God. Faith is the starting point of any relationship with God. Yet, it seems an area of our life we can be easily challenged. Even Jesus speaks the words, “O you of little faith” (Matthew 6:30, 8:26, 14:31) The quoted verse declares without faith, it is impossible to please God. If you don’t believe in God and all He does, there is no way to be pleasing. Pleasing God starts in the heart, our disposition, our reason for doing what will please God. It is wonderful to do something good. But God cares why we do good. If we do a good thing to receive reward and praise, God is not pleased. If you do good to please God, God is pleased. Having faith to know God and then doing God’s will is how God wants us to spread His name, His plan, and His love. God depends on those who have faith.

If you have faith you demonstrate it by action. God knows our heart but wants to see us act faithfully, not be passive about our faith. In all the examples provided in Hebrews each faithful person had to act, they did not sit back and say nice things, they did God things.

How do you demonstrate your faith? What do you think is pleasing to God?
