Acts 2:21 – March 5, 2019

and it shall be that everyone shall be saved who calls on the name of the Lord. Acts 2:21 NABRE

The early sections of the Acts of the Apostles describe Jesus’ Ascension from the earth to heaven and then the sending of the Holy Spirit to strengthen the disciples as Jesus promised. Jerusalem is filled for the Jewish Feast of Pentecost, which began as a harvest feast and became a feast commemorating God’s giving of the covenant law on Mount Sinai. Those attending from many different countries and areas hear the Apostles speak in their native tongues. Peter stood and gave a speech about the last days. Peter’s speech is mostly taken from a prophet in the Hebrew Scriptures named Joel. When prophesied by Joel at the time of his speaking this would have been seen as Joel anticipating that the Lord will someday renew faithful Jews with the divine spirit. Peter invoking Joel’s words suggest that the new Christian community, filled with divine life and power, on the Last Day’s will see wonders and signs and the coming of the Lord on that splendid day. A day of salvation for all who believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ. Everyone who calls on the Lord will be saved. In the final judgement believers will be drawn in to Jesus and given life. To be saved means to be made alive, a person whose life is full, integrated and flowing from the divine.

It seems unusual that Peter on the first real day of preaching, the birthday of the church, is speaking about the last days. Peter knew every day with Jesus was a day when he was alive, speaking he is fully connected to the vine, Spirit flowing through him. Salvation, life, is a now event, connected on the vine provides a divine flow. We can look forward to great last days, but life in Jesus is great daily.

Are you alive in Christ? Do you look forward to each day?
