Hebrews 13:5 – January 2, 2019

Let your life be free from love of money but be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never forsake you or abandon you.” Hebrews 13:5 NABRE

In the last chapter of the letter to the Hebrews some practical advice is offered, instructions on life in the Christian community. As the chapter opens it encourages us to never forget hospitality, brotherly love, and solidarity with those who are ill-treated and prisoners. The next verse exhorts honor in marriage and condemnation of debauchery and adultery. The quoted verse addresses a spirit of poverty, we should be detached from possessions and trust in God. It is a common message throughout Christian teaching, money becomes too powerful an attraction and gets priority over all else. Love of money directly opposes the love of others. It closes hearts and in reality it is selfish. To combat this we must place our trust in God. God will always be with us, helping us be content with what we have. Jesus came to teach that love is the most important command to follow, love God and love others. These teachings from Hebrews prioritize relationship, all else should aid us in loving.

As followers of Jesus we must focus on loving our brothers and sisters, and sharing hope. We should be a positive influence in their lives. If every Christian looked after another Christian when they had a need, we would be growing the Body of Christ. No Christian should ever walk alone. People were attracted to Jesus when they met him and to the Christian communities that formed. They were attracted to the love and acceptance they received from Jesus and His followers. We need to be attractive so others will come to know Jesus. People should learn from us, being accepted, loved and encouraged is the way of a Christian.

How can you help someone you know? What help do you need that I can offer you?
