Luke 2:13-14 – December 24, 2018

And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:13-14 NABRE

Luke is telling the story of the birth of Jesus, explaining how Joseph and Mary must travel to Bethlehem for a census and stay with the animals where Jesus is born. To announce this great event an angel appears to shepherds in the hills. As the angel is telling of the divine birth a multitude of heavenly hosts, an army of angels, begins a chorus of praise, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those to whom his favors rests.” Glory for all in heaven and on earth. Peace for all those receiving God’s favor. After Jesus’ life Paul tells us Jesus “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance,” (Philippians 2:7) The birth of Jesus begins a life of emptying. Announcing to shepherds, people of lowly status in society, those whom society ignores, are first to hear this divine news. This humble announcement accompanied with the glorious and sweet voices of angels are proclaiming glory, angelic music for those who are lowly, alone and not esteemed, except by God. God uses the weak to shame the strong and the foolish to shame the wise. God flips the power paradigm upside down.

Certainly God could have arranged for His Son to be born in comfort and extravagance. But God’s example is humility. Take notice, God begins His own life simple. In heaven it is a most joyful event, with a heavenly chorus’ proclaiming glory. God’s announcing, those favored are those who are the least. If you do for the least you are doing for God. No matter, you are precious and loved by God.

How do you relate to those whom society looks down upon? What is your status in society?
