Isaiah 7:17 – December 23, 2018

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign; the young woman, pregnant and about to bear a son, shall name him Emmanuel. Isaiah 7:14 NABRE

The prophet Isaiah is the prophet most quoted by Jesus. There are many prophecies in Isaiah meant for the nation of Israel at the time of the prophecy that could also be understood to be prophesizing the Messiah. We see an example of that in the quoted verse. Isaiah’s prophecy is spoken to King Ahaz who makes a political alliance rather than trusting God. The alliance helps with an immediate problem but eventually Ahaz loses control and the ally makes the King and his nation a vassal kingdom. Isaiah stated that a young women, perhaps Ahaz’s wife, would conceive and bear a son, whose name Emmanuel (God is with us) signifying that Yahweh was present to protect his people.

This prophecy may also predict Mary conceiving the child Jesus and bringing the savior into the world. New covenant writers have captured this Emmanuel prophecy and made it truly a Christian message, portraying Jesus as the royal figure of whom Isaiah foretold. This is a verse we see often at Christmas and can even hear in Christmas songs. For those of Ahaz’s time they wished he listened to Isaiah. We Christians are lucky to have more than this prediction to build faith in Jesus and his mission as savior. Definitive evidence does not exist; believers depend on faith to believe. There are many celebrating Christmas, singing songs, but lack the faith to believe God is with us, through Jesus. Christmas is a time to live out our faith. We should be kind, generous and share as much as we can in the name of Jesus. We should do all we can to make Jesus irresistible again, so others may know God is with us.

Do you live in such a way that people know God is with you? How could you help others believe?
