Luke 6:38 – December 17, 2018

Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. Luke 6:38 NABRE

Jesus is teaching a great crowd His Sermon on the Plain, a long teaching on Christian living. It includes teachings on Blessings, how to be happy. He tells them to love their enemies, turn your other cheek when struck, give to everyone who asks, do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful. In the quoted verse Jesus teaches when we give we will be given in return and not just given we will we receive a bonus and great generosity from God. When we give in the name of God we receive an abundance from God in return, no one out gives God. God’s generosity will be poured all over our lap. Then we hear a variation of the Golden Rule, to treat others as you wish to be treated. Here Jesus says, “the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.” How you treat others will be how you are treated. As a Christian we should always want the best for others, to do what we can to help and serve. It is the life Jesus modeled for us and the life we are instructed to live as Jesus followers.

Imagine a world where we help one another when there is a need. A world where even our enemies are aided. Today it seems the safety net is through an organization. The hungry are fed by a Caring Kitchen, clothing provided by a Caring Closet. Organizations and agencies help with housing, income, and aid to buy food. Jesus’ plan calls for people helping people, this happens less and less. Is there giving from God if we don’t give to people?

Do you personally help others? Does it concern you that Christians give more to organizations than reaching out to people?
