Ephesians 6:12 – December 16, 2018

For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Ephesians 6:12 NABRE

Paul is concluding his letter to the community at Ephesus, exhorting them to remain strong. Paul is reminding the community about spiritual warfare, the Christian community against the devil. Paul tells the community to put on the armor of God and stand firm. Paul warns them the struggle is not with flesh and blood but with principalities and powers. These terms designate angelic beings both good and evil. Here the reference is the realm of Satan, evil under the authority of Satan. Christ has broken the influence of evil powers, exalted at the right hand of God, a position of authority beyond every conceivable evil angelic being. Believers resist these evil influences by calling on the power of God. In union with Christ, believers share in His authority over these principalities and powers to break their control and influence. Paul also addresses the influence of the rulers of the world who can lead people astray. Believers depending on the strength of Christ can avoid the influence of culture and leaders who seek personal gain over the good of Christ and his people.

The influence of these principalities and powers can lead those in the secular world to think there is more wrong with the world than good. It is a compelling reason followers should influence others to depend on the power of Christ. With Christ they will defeat the influence and control of these evil beings. Ultimately Christ is victorious but until He comes again these beings work outside the realm of Christ followers.

Do you call on the power of Jesus to influence your life? Do you trust Jesus even when you see bad things happenings?
