3 John 1:2 – November 11, 2018

Beloved, I hope you are prospering in every respect and are in good health, just as your soul is prospering. 3 John 1:2 NABRE

This Third Letter of John is the shortest writing in the cannon called the New Testament. It is not a letter concerned with truths of the faith or calling for love. This letter concerns relationships, and in particular the relationships between leaders in the early Church. John is writing about a leader in one community. John commends the community on their welcome and positive feedback by visitors. John knows they follow truth, they remain focused on Jesus and accept nothing from the pagans. He tells them to support one another. One leader John calls out as dominant and unsupportive of other leaders, he is spreading evil about other leaders, not accepting them as visitors and expelling them from the church, even John’s authority is disrespected. But John wants the community to prosper, to do good even in the face of evil and not to let relationship issues thwart the good meant to be done by followers of Jesus. They are beloved, should prosper, be in good health and know their soul is always prospering, as he states in his opening greeting.

Do you let relationship troubles stop the good work you can do for God? Is it difficult to work with people who seem to have their own agenda and plan for success? In all we do as followers of Jesus we should be pointing to God, never ourselves. We must work for good, even when someone is working against us. Jesus went to the cross, His success, with many people against Him and his mission. He succeeded because he kept his eye on the Father not on any difficulties that came his way. We must do the same.

Can you work your mission while being challenged by others? Can you put relationship issues to the side and do good for God?

We must work for good, even when someone is working against us. Jesus went to the cross, His success, with many people against Him and his mission. Click To Tweet
