Hebrews 11:1 – November 10, 2018

Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 NABRE

The Letter to the Hebrews is considered more a homily to be spoken than a letter written and read to the community, its style is more for preaching. Chapter eleven begins a new section of the letter which addresses faith and endurance. It begins as we read in the quoted verse defining faith. Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Faith is defined by means of its effects. This definition of faith does not define a relation between the person and God. In fact it is a non-religious definition of faith. It implies a relationship between two human persons. When a person promises to do something for you, you have faith they will do it. When someone competent tells you something you cannot verify you rely on them for the information to be true, you have faith in what they told you. We do this more than we realize. The section continues giving examples of faith from some of the ancestors of the Hebrew people. The examples touch on things believed by the ancestors without evidence.

In our relationship with God we place our hope and sight in Him. We demonstrate faith through our actions, and demonstrate our beliefs by our behavior. If you trust God for your daily bread, then your refrigerator can be empty. If you trust God to set you up for a new job, you buy the clothes you need for the first day before you even hear if you got the job or not. It is in our action that we demonstrate we have faith in God and we will see the evidence we need from God in time. Our entire relationship with God is based on faith, everything we hear, know and believe about God cannot be touched or seen, but it is our hope.

How do you demonstrate your faith? What are you dependent on God to receive daily?

In our relationship with God we place our hope and sight in Him. We demonstrate faith through our actions, and demonstrate our beliefs by our behavior. If you trust God for your daily bread, then your refrigerator can be empty. Click To Tweet
