For there is one God. There is also one mediator between God and the human race, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself as ransom for all. This was the testimony at the proper time. 1 Timothy 2:5-6 NABRE
The First Letter of Timothy is written to a well-organized church, but the church is having problems, even among its leaders. The letter provides important directives for the life of the Church. Today’s quoted verse is one of those directives. There is one God. Each group or tribe had their own God, but the Christian message declares there is one God for everyone; Jew, Gentile, Pagan. God is the God of all. There is one mediator between God and humanity, Jesus. Jesus shows the human race God and God has a view of humanity through Jesus. We learn about God from Jesus teaching. He brings our desires, needs and prayers to God. Jesus teaches God is Father and God’s plan for salvation. Jesus gave Himself for all, an unlimited gift. We must accept this gift, it is not forced on us. Such an important gift it is declared “testimony at the proper time.” The desire for all to accept this gift is declared a testimony (literally proof) of their love. A witness of Jesus and the Father’s love and desire for all to be saved. Others can teach and lead us toward God, but a prophet who does not point to this one mediator is false.
Jesus story is one of God doing everything possible to jump up and down in front of us saying, I am God, I love you, I want you to be with me eternally, see how I show my love for you. It is incredible to imagine God of the universe being so concerned for each and every one of us. But this is exactly what we are to see in Jesus presence in the world. God so loved you, he would do anything and everything for you.
