Psalms 28:7 – September 3, 2018

The LORD is my strength and my shield, in whom my heart trusts. I am helped, so my heart rejoices; with my song I praise him. Psalms 28:7 NABRE

In psalm twenty-eight the psalmist is calling out to the Lord in prayer, asking the Lord to hear and help. He approaches the Lord with supplication, (asking humbly,) raising hands in prayer, usually a sign of worship. He is asking the Lord to save him and to punish those with a wicked heart, the workers of evil. Then realizing that God is at work in his life he begins to sing blessing to the Lord. The Lord is his protection, strength, shield and he trust in the Lord. Recognizing the Lord’s help his heart rejoices and he sings praise to the Lord. This should be an image familiar to us. Arms raised in worship, singing to the Lord. It is something that has gone on for thousands of years and it moved people then as it moves us today. When we realize that God is our help, that God is actively in our life blessing us, we rejoice and naturally raise our arms and sing. Many times in worship we have an emotional response, we feel the music, we feel the spirit moving in us. Emotion is useful. God wants us to be passionate about Him and the message of Christianity, that Jesus gave witness to love and died for salvation. If we feel it in our heart, we will move it with our legs.

God doesn’t want a lukewarm follower. God wants us to jump and sing and raise our arms because we have had an experience of Him. When we are passionate about God, even when we don’t say anything, people will come to believe because of how we act. Passionate people can’t stop illuminating what makes them passionate and it has an effect.

Have you had an emotional experience of God? Does your passion force you to raise your arms and rejoice?
