Proverbs 17:22 – September 4, 2018

A joyful heart is the health of the body, but a depressed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22 NABRE

The proverbs of chapter seventeen are attributed to Solomon, the king who asks for and receives the gift of wisdom from God. The quoted verse makes a connection between a joyful heart and physical health. If your heart is happy your body is happy. The converse is true, an unhappy spirit leads to an unhealthy body. The feeling of emptiness is something that a surprising number of people, including successful people feel. Most of us are trying to achieve something, to attain some level, either at work, or in our possessions, or in sport or training. We feel like if we attain a certain level we will be satisfied. But we become successful and want more, better, different. It becomes an addiction, it makes us crave more. In order to find true joy we must surrender control of our life to something bigger. We must have a life-giving relationship with Jesus. The cause of Jesus is a cause much bigger than ourselves. We surrender our own desires and wants for others. To be joyful we can never be selfish, we must live with humility and enjoy the affection of others. When you surrender yourself, something greater arises. God can use you letting others see your joy. You will be spiritually, emotionally, physically and socially healthy.
