Proverbs 18:21 – August 16, 2018

Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who choose one shall eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21 NABRE

Much of proverbs is a collection of wise sayings, maxims in one or two sentences with powerful advice. The quoted verse is clear, words kill or give life and you bear with the consequences. Speech has the biggest impact on human interaction. Say one cruel or unkind word even if you follow it with a thousand positive words, your cruelty is eternal to the hearer. There are many ways we can kill each other with words, by: gossip, slander, rumor, corrupting, defiling, harsh, foolish, crude, careless, cursing, perverse, lies, evil, and slander. We can use words to get even, take revenge, ruin another or just make ourselves look better. There are words that are gracious, soft, gentle, blessing, good, sound, truth, thoughtful, wise, and positive. We can use words to encourage, to build up, to instill confidence and give love. The advice of scripture is our words should be sweeter than honey.

A message series entitled “Me & My Big Mouth” by @Andy_Stanley addresses the power of the tongue in four messages; 1) if we are QUICK TO LISTEN and listen longer, we have a better chance of learning and protecting ourselves from our own big mouths, 2) our tongues are UNTAMABLE like a spark that sets a green forest ablaze, we need to learn to control it, 3) when we build ACCORDING TO CODE our tongue can be used to build up or tear down, learn to use this power for good, 4) when we find people RIGHT WHERE WE WANT ‘EM we have the chance to use words as stones, do we throw them or use them to pave a new way forward. The series is brilliant, watching would be wise, making the lessons habit, wiser. Find it at http://northpoint.org/messages/me-and-my-big-mouth/
