To find a wife is to find happiness, a favor granted by the LORD. Proverbs 18:22 NABRE
This one verse from proverbs might make us smile a little but is filled with truth. Scripture has many verses that speak about the relationship of the wife to the husband. In the days of this proverb the wife took care of the home, while the husband might be a hunter, farmer or some other kind of worker, his place outside the home. He can have great peace of mind knowing his wife is taking care of the family, their children, keeping up with the house, having children. It was a joy to have a wife, one who was supporting and thoughtful, reserved, beautiful, graceful, virtuous and a pleasure to hold. There is a verse from Sirach, “Happy the man who lives with a sensible woman, and the one who does not plow with an ox and a donkey combined.” 25:8 NABRE Amusing, but the plowing was difficult if you put the ox and donkey together. Verse 26 in Sirach says the husband’s days are doubled with a good wife, she brings him joy, peace, whether he is rich or poor his heart is content, a smile ever on his face, yes a good wife is a generous gift from God.
Today it is as true! The wife of the modern era handles so much around the home and in many cases has to work outside the home to help with finances. A good wife is very much a gift to a husband, she is reliable, a good listener, supportive, able to keep her husband peaceful, she is thoughtful, in many ways she is the greatest example of love and intimacy a husband may ever know. She is present day after day. In my experience the amount of emotional, social, physical and spiritual support given by my wife cannot be obtained anywhere else, she is happiness. Today as in the past a wife is the foundation of a good marriage.
