Romans 8:26 – August 18, 2018

In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. Romans 8:26 NABRE

Paul writing to the community in Rome, is making way for a future visit. In the Eight Chapter of Romans he talks about the work of the Spirit, being children of God and the purpose of suffering. In the section on suffering Paul says, as adopted children of God we are not given a life free and easy. We will have challenges and suffering, hopefully they will bring real redemptive value to our lives and help us have a significant role in God’s design of salvation. The quoted verse referring to weakness and suffering, we are heard by God and we are also helped by God. The Spirit intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. The Spirit adds voice to our moans and sighs, wordless intention that God receives as prayer. The Spirit helps, knowing we do not know how to pray as we should, not always understanding the purpose of trials and tribulations. Through the Spirit’s help we come to understand God’s way, we become familiar with God and God’s purpose. Our prayers are molded by the Spirit toward God’s will not our own. We might pray to take our suffering away, but might be better served enduring suffering, leaning on God. Through trials God helps us grow, to be more dependent, helping us endure in suffering and growing in Christian maturity.

Times of adversity are times to reach to God. God reaches down and helps us up off our knees that we may stand tall as His child. When life is good we depend on ourselves, but when facing adversity we turn control over to God. This is when we discover God’s true power and utmost love.

Is there suffering in your life? Have you endured suffering closing in on God’s love? Do you try to pray struggles away?
