Paul is closing out his letter to the Philippians with many lines of thanks and blessing. He recalls that the community at Philippi had sent him something for his needs, and they were the only ones. He uses his thanks to say he was thankful for the gift, although he knew he could be self-sufficient in Christ. Paul is greatly impressed in their giving and that it is blessing for them. By giving to Paul, they live on less and show their dependence on God. Paul explained he lives completely dependent on God as well, highlighting the greatness giving affords them to receive, especially to receive freedom in being God’s. He is reminding them as Christians their ultimate security lies in Christ. Paul assures them that he is able to deal with famine or abundance, suffering or comfort all with a proper dependence on the Lord. @Andy_Stanley included in his message this past week that there is joy in organizing our financial world around give, save, live. First, give some percentage of our finances, then save a percentage and finally live on what remains. What you do with your resources is a reflection of whose you are. All comes from God, so depend on God for all.
There is freedom in knowing that in any situation our sufficiency comes from God. When we think our security and financial margin depends on us, we are filled with worry and insecurity. Paul teaches God will fully supply whatever you need, and when he does God is glorified though Christ. Being God’s, we live as God’s, brought to Him through the life of Christ.
