No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13 NABRE
The heart of Jesus moral teaching is simply; “to love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34) Jesus loves His disciples with a total self-giving. Jesus love is most evident when He is on the cross laying down His life for the salvation of all. This act shows perfect love and perfect obedience. This quoted verse and the verses before and after it teach about love and friendship. The impression is that Jesus is asking us to die to demonstrate our love for one another, and this is one possibility. But Jesus uses other language in Luke 22:19 “This is my body which will be given for you.” Jesus allows that we can “give” our life for another. Life giving is common in the case of a husband and wife, one becomes disabled, the other gives their life for the love of their spouse, caring and assisting to the point of totally living for their spouse. We can see this kind of giving when someone is being harassed or abused and another comes to their aid. Many would say all service personal, armed forces, police, fire fighters, etc. give their life for others. Perhaps you befriend someone lonely, visiting and keeping them company. Maybe you bring food to someone elderly who can’t get out. There are so many ways to give our life for another, it is not necessary that it be life ending.
Are you giving your life for another? Do you give with love? The heart of being Christian is to follow Jesus’ teaching. How can we say we follow Jesus if we do not do what He tells us to do? In life we sometimes do things grudgingly, or with a bad attitude. But love has an attitude of gratitude. Give your life with love. Be Jesus to the one who needs you, help carry their load joyfully.
