Speak to them this word: Let my eyes stream with tears night and day, without rest, Over the great destruction which overwhelms the virgin daughter of my people, over her incurable wound. Jeremiah 14:17 NABRE
God is speaking to Jeremiah about tears He sheds because of the sins of the people and the destruction that is being enacted by foreign powers. The people are being punished because they have been faithless for so long, going back several years and the city is under attack from a foreign power. Though God grieves for the people He will not interrupt the difficulty they will endure which will have them turn again to God in trust and faithfulness. For over fifty years the wickedness of the people has been tolerated and so the Lord has no option but to allow destruction; the people have rejected Him. Jeremiah for his part is deeply anguished because there is nothing he can do or say to God to ward off this great misfortune. He has tried to exhort the people to accept the truth of God’s message and to bear persecution with endurance and faith. Prophets speak for God and those God send are only messengers. But as we see in the case with Jeremiah, a great prophet, he is quite empathetic and compassionate and has a heart for the people.
The destruction of the nation including the most important city is seen as God’s punishment, clearly a human perspective. But if the people are faithful there is no doubt God could intercede on their behalf. When we are walking with God in faith all we do seems to have a divine intervention, when we are taking care of life on our own we don’t allow space for the divine to assist. God wants to be a partner but we have to be in communion with God so He knows we are able to accept His help.
How close are you to God? Do you draw strength from God’s help?
