from afar the LORD appears: With age-old love I have loved you; so I have kept my mercy toward you. Jeremiah 31:3 NABRE
The Prophet Jeremiah is positioned to see a new Babylonian Empire threaten Israel, Jerusalem fall and the deportation of many to Babylon. The verse quoted is in a section of prophecies called the Book of Consolation. The Israelite people were not faithful, their kingdom destroyed, yet God will restore them. God promises a rebuilding of Jerusalem and a renewal of the people, based on a new covenant that will endure forever. God declares He is the God of all the families of Israel and they are His people. They will find grace in the wilderness and from a far the Lord will appear. God promises although you have been taken far from home, you can count on seeing Me again. I love you with an age-old (everlasting) love and you will know mercy. The Lord loves Israel with a love of special choosing, much like the love of a spouse. Therefore He always pardons their infidelities and betrayals. Mercy signifies a special power of love, prevailing over sin and infidelity, bringing the people back to a place of grace.
Marriage is a special relationship, times of difficulty, followed by times of forgiveness and love. Broken moments are restored with merciful love. God models this relationship with the Israelites, it is our example as married Christians on how to love one another. We spur one another on, good for our spouse, enticing growth, unconditional love, and fidelity. Marriage is a covenant one to another creating everlasting (age-old) love. Society today is ready to throw so much away, including people; marriage is the model of enduring love, care and fidelity. Marriage is the strongest human bond, it must be held up for all to learn mercy.
